MTA’s Field Crew Kept Alaska Moving Forward Throughout Volatile 2022

2022 Marked an Impressive Year in the Field for MTA

Like most Alaskans, our dedicated field crew are no strangers to the state’s frequent severe weather. But what they are able to physically accomplish through challenging ice, snow, wind and other elements of our rugged terrain is truly remarkable.

2022 began with a historic windstorm impacting MTA’s service territory, with gusts of up to 50 mph causing hazardous conditions and severe wind chill. The year ended with the deepest snowfall in December since the 1950s.

Project milestones last year included completing utility relocation work for the Knik Goose Bay Phase 1 road project and ongoing network upgrades and deployment projects throughout the Mat-Su Valley.

Additional 2022 project milestones that helped set our team apart included:

  • Achieving the MTA Outside Plant (OSP) Plan for Fiber and Upgrades with 171 miles of fiber laid at 1,166 locations
  • Completing the USDA Grant Project at Eagle’s Nest at Kashwitna and Preserve at Sheep Creek with 14.4 miles of fiber laid, 142 fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) structures built, and 361 lots served
  • Completing year one of a three-year FTTx Buildout in existing area with Fiber Brownfields, 552 FTTH structures built, and 995 lots served
  • Construction on 80 Greenfield subdivisions
  • Completing 515 OSP work orders (engineering, placing and/or splicing)
  • Clearing 24.3 miles of land
  • Completing 7.3 miles of directional boring
  • Working with 123 contract personnel including 5 telecommunications, 8 electrical and 10 support contractors
  • Completing 11 ADOT/MSB relocate work orders with 2 partially complete work orders carried into 2023

This work isn’t self-serving – it helps to keep our members’ connections strong, our communities linked, and their economies stable. So, as we reflect on another highly productive year, we want to send out one final “thank you” to the men and women who brave the most extreme conditions to keep our communities connected. We know you will be there through whatever Alaska throws at us, making sure that we keep growing and keep moving forward.

Palmer, Alaska – August 21, 2019 – MTA, Alaska’s best choice for technology and communications products, announced today that registration for the 2019 edition of its eUnlimited™ BYTE Gaming Tournament, the premier esports event in Alaska, is now open.

The third annual eUnlimited™ tournament will be held Saturday, October 5, 2019 on the MTA Turf Arena at the Menard Sports Center in Wasilla, Alaska. Highlights of the event include cash prizes for tournament winners, game demonstrations and a standalone tournament exclusively for Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District students within the eUnlimited™ series.

“MTA is proud to lead Alaska’s growth in the esports world and look forward to the connections between education and technology that eUnlimited™ will continue to develop,” said Michael Burke, CEO of MTA. “Our technology and internet infrastructure minimizes distances for many Alaskans, and we take pride in delivering innovative ways to continue connecting residents of the Mat-Su Valley to each other and to the rest of the world, as we have done since 1953. Esports provides a fun, social and high-tech new avenue for that same goal.”

Over the past three years, eUnlimited™ has served as a signature event helping to growing Alaska’s Matanuska-Susitna Valley – and the state as a whole – into a major hub for esports, all while underscoring MTA’s long-running commitment to giving back to the communities it serves.

“As our involvement in esports continues to blossom, we couldn’t be more excited about what the next edition of eUnlimited™ has in store for the esports fans and players in our community, including those who are newcomers to the space,” said MTA’s Esports Coordinator, Brandon Meiners. “It is an honor to give back to the communities we serve, and we are proud to provide students of the Mat-Su Valley with the opportunity and technological capabilities to engage in a fun and exciting event each year.”

In esports as well as other areas, MTA has remained rooted in the communities it serves through partnerships with local organizations such as Warehouse 49 and the University of Alaska Anchorage, and has hosted a variety of gaming events around Anchorage. MTA has collaborated with the Mat-Su Borough School District on helping its students get involved with esports, including advising on the district’s launch of its first esports league in 2018 and creating the district’s own tournament within MTA’s eUnlimited™ BYTE Gaming Tournament.

MTA Recognized by FCC as Honoree of the Inaugural Digital Opportunity Equity Recognition (DOER) Program

MTA has been recognized by the FCC as an honoree of the inaugural Digital Opportunity Equity Recognition (DOER) Program for our efforts to close the digital divide during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We couldn’t be more proud of this honor and want to give thanks to our employees who came together while apart by quickly mobilizing initiatives to ensure our communities remained connected – from public WiFi locations, free upgrades for educators and students, supporting local businesses and committing to not disconnect anyone financially affected by COVID-19.

On March 16th, MTA implemented remote work for as many employees as possible. The following day, we closed our retail locations and eliminated in-home services to protect our staff and member-owners.

Within two weeks, 90% of our workforce was successfully working remotely.

During this transition to telecommuting, our staff worked tirelessly to ensure that while our physical offices are temporarily closed, all of our member solutions remain  available.

At the same time, our staff across departments collaborated to not only keep our communities connected, but to provide as much support and relief as possible. Here are a few ways that they made that happen:

  • Signed and supported the “Keep America Connected” Pledge, which urges providers to waive late fees and not terminate service to any customers facing economic hardship due to COVID-19
  • Partnered with the City of Wasilla, Palmer, Houston, and the Mat-Su Borough to install drive-in Wi-Fi hotspots so those without internet at home are able to connect, as well as an eLearning Enablement program that provided nearly 3,000 free upgrades to students and educators as they transitioned to distance learning
  • Participated in local activities such as the “The Great American Takeout,” which supported local restaurants, and powered a local live-streamed fundraising concert
  • Successfully ran MTA Gaming’s first all virtual esports tournaments that raised funds for both Wasilla Area Seniors, Inc. and the Mat-Su Seniors Center, helping the latter continue delivering food to seniors through its Meals on Wheels program

The efforts of our staff during this time are inspiring and their commitment to the communities we serve is clear. Thank you to all of our employees!

4 Steps to Take if Your Email has Been Pwned

What does being pwned mean?

Being pwned means that someone has taken control of your email address, or a user profile that has been created with it. And hacking an account is possibly the first step of identity theft, with online accounts often containing sensitive personal information, such as your credit card number, phone number, home address, and full name.

Identity theft can cause financial damage, intense personal stress, and a plethora of legal problems. And if your email account and password end up in the wrong hands, criminals can access your personal details and purchase goods in your name. Things can get even worse, though. Because if you have reused the same password and email on other accounts, criminals can access these profiles as well, increasing the risk of identity theft exponentially.

How does your email get pwned?

Your login credentials can be stolen in a data breach  – and there’s a significant data breach almost every week. So, it’s a good idea to regularly check if your information has been stolen in a data breach with F-Secure’s free Identity Theft Checker. But it doesn’t stop at data breaches. As your accounts can also be hacked through malware attacks, or through phishing  scams.

But there’s no need to panic. If your account has been pwned, here are four things you can do to mitigate the risk:

1. Make sure your antivirus and operating system are up to date

Viruses and spyware can steal personal information and login credentials. Having up-to-date antivirus and operating systems on your devices is important in protecting your accounts from being pwned. The majority of core software that we use is regularly updated by vendors to prevent hackers from utilizing flaws and vulnerabilities. So turn on automatic updates, which can save you from a lot of trouble if you do not yet have them enabled.

2. Scan your device for malware

If there is malware on your device, changing your account password isn’t enough. That’s because the attacker can steal your newly created password using malware. So, before you change any passwords, run a virus scan. If the scan detects an infection, deal with it first. If you already changed passwords, change them again. Because they might have already been compromised.

3. Now, change your passwords

Changing your password is the most important thing to do if your account has been pwned. If you have reused your password on other accounts, you should change passwords for those accounts as well.

Criminals will try to access accounts with payment details and other valuable data. But if the attacker has already changed your password to in a hacked account, don’t panic. You may still be able to restore your account through the “forgot your password” function.

4. Check your email settings

If your email account has been pwned, criminals can set it to automatically forward your messages to the attacker and to send malware, phishing scams, or spam. So check your settings and see if you find anything alarming.

You might also want to send an email to your contacts or post on social media that your email has been pwned, to warn against opening any attachments sent by you. This can save your contacts from being infected by malware.

How can you protect your email from being pwned?

Dealing with a compromised email address is possible, but the best course of action is to never let it happen in the first place. And you can cut that risk significantly by following these simple steps:

  1. Pay attention to the sender addresses of emails and SMS messages; don’t fall for phishing or smishing
  2. Be cautious when you open files, links, or install programs. Your bank or authorities don’t ask you to authenticate information online. Most likely you didn’t win a lottery prize either, and the “hot singles in your area” would probably use other methods to contact you
  3. Enabling two-factor authentication is essential in protecting your online accounts. That’s why many banks and service providers use it. Follow their example when possible
  4. Set your email address under 24/7 breach monitoring, and you’ll get alerts when a data breach including your personal information has occurred. This gives you time to change the password before anyone can get into your account
  5. And finally, always use unique passwords.

You can create unique passwords for free with F-Secure Strong Password Generator. Get a password manager, and you can then save all these passwords securely. This way they are always with you, and you can copy paste or autofill them when needed. It’s easier, safer, and faster.

MTA Fiber Holdings Completes AlCan ONE, Historic First All-Terrestrial Fiber Line That Will Improve Alaska’s Connectivity

MTA Fiber Holdings Completes AlCan ONE, Historic First All-Terrestrial Fiber Line
That Will Improve Alaska’s Connectivity

Fiber line that connects Alaska to the contiguous United States and beyond, began construction in spring 2019

Palmer, Alaska – May 26, 2020 – MTA Fiber Holdings, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MTA, Alaska’s best choice for technology and communications products, has officially completed construction and commenced operation of AlCan ONE (Alaska Canada Overland Network), the first and only all terrestrial fiber network connecting Alaska to the contiguous United States and beyond.

AlCan ONE, which began construction in spring 2019, establishes a secure and reliable fiber connection to any point in the contiguous United States, providing MTA’s members, as well as Alaska as a whole, with a robust internet transport connection for decades to come. The network has capabilities of over 100 terabits per second, which can be expanded and increased as demand grows.

The line runs nearly 300 miles long from North Pole, Alaska, to the Canadian border before connecting with Canadian carriers, helping to extend MTA’s existing network through Canada and on to major hubs in the United States.

“After decades of talk about a terrestrial fiber optic path out of Alaska, our whole organization is proud to have accomplished this historic feat safely and efficiently,” said Michael Burke, CEO of MTA. “Especially during this pandemic, connection via technology is absolutely vital, and whatever short-term capacity forecast that we had when we began this project a year ago has been blown out of the water due to the COVID-19 crisis. We don’t know what the new normal is going to look like, but the AlCan ONE network lays the groundwork to meet the needs for today, while helping us plant the seeds to meet future demand and help Alaska grow.”

“The completion of this line is not just a win for MTA – it is a win for all of the people and businesses of Alaska,” said Francis LaChapelle, Vice President of Wholesale and Carrier Relations. “We’re very grateful for all of the carriers, communities, businesses and legislators who helped make this possible, and we’re confident that the benefits of this highly successful project will be felt by all. We’re looking forward to developing partnerships with telecommunications organizations across the state to maximize the value of AlCan One for all Alaskans.”

The Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC), whose annual awards highlight international players who have made outstanding contributions to improving the ability of people and firms in the Pacific region, honored MTA with the 2020 Outstanding Wireline Company Award for its
work on AlCan ONE.

From Student to Specialist: An Alaskan Tech Journey Leads to MTA Shield

By: Zak Wolf, Product Specialist

As a young high school graduate in Alaska, I always foresaw myself in a career utilizing technology to develop and bring new products and services to life. Today, I am fortunate to work for one of the state’s technology leaders, leading a team through the development of innovative software that would help make life better and safer for thousands of local individuals, families and businesses.

But through MTA, that dream has become a reality not just for me but for its members.

My journey started at Mat-Su Career & Technical High School, which was made up of students who truly wanted to excel at a trade. I chose “Information Technology” as my pathway, and studied topics ranging from 3D modeling and engineering to AutoCAD drafting and electronics. The students all strived for the same thing – a focused career in their field of choosing following graduation.

Before long, I was beginning that career at MTA, working my way through roles in tech support and sales (where I honed skills in product and technical acumen as well as documentation) before eventually being offered a role in product development. I was thrilled to have this opportunity and take on more responsibility and creativity at MTA; starting with process design and improvement before slowly taking on MTA’s business voice solutions.

In this role is where I was given the most responsibility to date: taking on my first full-cycle development project: MTA Shield. For background as to why and how MTA Shield came to fruition, it’s worth taking a step back and looking at the context of MTA and the world more broadly.

It’s estimated that data breaches exposed over 4 million private records in the first half of 2019 alone, making it increasingly clear that the need for safe and secure access to internet is at an all-time high.

MTA doesn’t just provide access to internet and technology – we see it as one of our core priorities to keep the members of our co-op safe with solutions that they can trust, and also ones that are easy to manage.

As our members’ usage continued increasing year over year, MTA launched Unlimited Internet at the end of 2016, while the remaining issue of long-term capacity was solved by the recent completion of AlCan ONE, which connected Alaska to the lower 48. Between the roll-out of Unlimited Internet and the rise in connected devices (which were now more manageable through MTA’s totalWiFi™), it was clear that there was more that needed to be done to keep things secure on the micro level.

We started by hosting a series of cybersecurity classes, and we realized how great their interest – and concern – was. Thus, the idea for MTA Shield was born. This is a project that’s been many months in the making and one that’s required a great deal of communication and vigilance both internally between our development, security and executive teams and with members.

On a personal level, the MTA Shield development and roll-out put me in charge of a variety of vital tasks that I’d been preparing for throughout my education and career: vendor selection, packaging, pricing, branding, employee training, sales enablement and ultimately, market launch.

To make this project a reality, our team decided to partner with Finnish cyber security and privacy company F-Secure to help us create a detailed project plan to keep us on track and get the job done. Based on their credentials and reputation, we knew they would be the right ones to ensure our members were as secure as possible.

Now, we are excited to finally roll-out MTA Shield itself: a new suite of three apps that provide total device protection. These apps work in conjunction with each other and allow our members to take charge of their network security.

MTA Home Shield works with our totalWiFi gateway and provides advanced transparency and protection for your entire WiFi network. In addition to preventing attacks on WiFi devices, it also offers content filtering, device and user management; and provides the ability to set rules, such as screen time limits and pausing WiFi access during certain times for all or specific devices.

MTA Mobile Shield can be used at home and on the go. Downloaded directly to your mobile devices, it performs virus and malware scans and offers tools for safe browsing.

MTA Identity Shield prevents your personal information from ending up in the wrong places by detecting when your identity information is at risk and helping them take action. It also helps our members create and store stronger passwords.

Our product team has been proud to take an outside-in approach to this development and every other type of problem-solving by getting out of the office to better understand our members. By observing their lifestyles and challenges, we’re able to create meaningful solutions to empower them to live more connected lives.

Throughout this test of my skills, organization and leadership, I learned many things. Most notable was the importance of internal and external communication when there are so many moving parts (especially now, with much of the team working remotely); I can’t stress enough how vital keeping in touch with your team is throughout major projects. Additionally, having a detailed project plan with key milestones and deadlines is crucial.

  • There were so many firsts for me during the creation of MTA Shield, and it’s helped me bolster my understanding of not only starting a project like this from the ground up, but also the vigilance that is required to be successful in doing so. It’s been exhilarating to see MTA Shield come to fruition, and I’m so excited to continue working with the MTA team moving forward to create more innovative products that empower our members and build better realities for them.

Now that I’ve found myself in the role that I was so determined to achieve all the way back in high school, I’ve been proud to help empower future generations of tech leaders as well. I recently visited Mat-Su Career & Technical High School with fiber kit demos and other projects that I hope will inspire young students to follow their dreams and make them a reality.

Strengthening Community Investment By Investing In Eagle River, One Slippery Salmon at a Time

By Michael Burke, MTA CEO

It’s the talk of the town, an event unmatched in scale – the Slippery Salmon Olympics, held annually at the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce’s Bear Paw Festival, draws a significant crowd. And rightfully so – it takes a lot of skills to navigate an obstacle course, let alone while carrying a dinner tray, an empty can and a slippery salmon.

This unique event puts a quirky yet competitive flair on the Bear Paw Festival, an annual community summer celebration. Along the way of 34 years of Bear Paw Festivals, MTA has proudly served as a sponsor, carrying the torch of community support so all of us can get together, look back on the proud history of Eagle River, and celebrate its strength, resilience and independence.

As a 100% locally-owned and operated co-operative, we live in and share the communities alongside our members, and we have a genuine interest in their success. Investing in our communities and growing alongside them is vital to our values and who we are as a company, and we hope to demonstrate this to the Eagle River community with our continued support of the Bear Paw Festival.

While we stretch our salmon-carrying muscles in preparation for this year’s festival, which will be held on July 10-14 with a theme of “Shake, Rattle and Rebuild,” we’re highlighting our continued investment in Eagle River and the surrounding areas throughout the years. In looking back, we can see where we’ve been and continue looking forward with an even better focus.

MTA’s commitment to Eagle River and the communities we serve flows back to our earliest days of providing phone service to Eagle River to this year, where we are once again returning to support the Bear Paw Festival. Shawn Osbourne, MTA’s Marketing Events Specialist, has been closely involved with our Bear Paw celebrations over the years, noting that “participating in the Bear Paw Festival is always the highlight of our year, and it’s something our whole team gets excited about.”

Since those early days and into today, the momentum has built as we’ve continued investing in Eagle River’s residents to help the community grow and thrive in a variety of ways:

Our AlCan ONE network, operated by our wholly-owned subsidiary MTA Fiber Holdings, is the first and only all-terrestrial fiber route connecting Alaska to the contiguous United States. It will provide MTA’s members in Eagle River, as well as the rest of Alaska, with a robust internet transport connection for decades to come. It will be a major win for all Alaskans, strongly supporting business, job growth, and ultimately, our local economies.

Additionally, our MTA Foundation offers a range of scholarships specifically intended to help youth pursue education in technology or telecommunications, and we’re proud to have awarded 27 scholarships to recipients in 2019. Empowering students in Eagle River and throughout the Mat-Su Valley to pursue further education, these scholarships meaningfully support our youth in achieving their goals and dreams.

We’ve also regularly been welcoming Eagle River residents at our educational workshops, aimed at helping them live a more connected life, meeting their changing needs and being a better partner to each individual community member. We know times are changing fast in terms of technology, and we want to be there for our community each step of the way to make sure they’re aware of all the great streaming and internet options available.

These are all, of course, just a small sample of MTA’s work to shape our incredible communities. From this year’s Bear Paw Festival to the rest of 2019 and beyond, we will carry our mission and momentum forward and continue to find ways to invest in the great people, businesses and history of Eagle River.

MTA Unveils New Location at Shoppes at Sun Mountain

Last year, we proudly announced that MTA would become the preferred technology provider of Wasilla’s Shoppes at Sun Mountain, powering the premier shopping destination with advanced, high-speed internet connectivity using MTA’s totalWiFi.

If that wasn’t enough, we were also thrilled to announce that a new, 6,000 sq. ft. MTA space would be a part of the Shoppes. And now, it’s finally time to unveil this home for our members and the Wasilla community alike.

So how will we use this brand-new space, which was brilliantly designed by the Native-owned and 100% women-owned SALT?

First and foremost, this location will serve as our “Wasilla hub” and features a call center office for our staff.  But it will also be fully equipped with an experiential multi-use area that will benefit members, partners and the community with interactive, high-tech features such as demonstrations of our streaming TV, home networking, and cybersecurity products.

Additionally, it will be available for members to use as a high-tech meeting space for area businesses, with an advanced presentation setup, and of course, fast and reliable connectivity. And in the weeks ahead, it will serve as the “mission control” of our 2020 (virtual) MTA Gaming Tournament, and will serve as a similar home for future gaming expos.

Closing the digital divide and deepening connections between education and technology are obviously quite important to us. Because of this, our new space will be a home for a variety of community education opportunities and workshops in the future.

We’re beyond thrilled to open this new location at the Shoppes at Sun Mountain. Empowering our members and the Alaskan community as a whole to live more connected lives is at our core, and we believe this new space achieves just that. Our hope for the future of this space is for our local Alaskan community to experience MTA in a whole new, vibrant light.

We will see you there!
