MTA Fiber Holdings, LLC, to Build First All-Terrestrial Fiber Line to Connect Alaska with Contiguous U.S. and Beyond

MTA Fiber Holdings, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MTA, is working to ensure the future viability and growth of middle mile transport networks in Alaska

Construction has commenced on the project, which is set for completion by mid-2020

Palmer, Alaska – May 1, 2019 – MTA Fiber Holdings, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MTA, Alaska’s best choice for technology and communications products, announced today that it plans to build AlCan ONE (Alaska Canada Overland Network), the first and only all-terrestrial fiber network connecting Alaska to the contiguous United States and beyond.

The new all-terrestrial network will initially have capacity of over 100 terabits per second, which can be expanded and increased in the future as demand grows. The network will establish a secure and reliable fiber connection to any point in the contiguous United States, providing MTA’s members, as well as Alaska, with a robust internet transport connection for decades to come.

“This is a major step for Alaska that will ensure future capacity requirements for MTA members and can support the continuing growth of broadband across the state of Alaska,” said Michael Burke, CEO of MTA.

Currently, MTA pays significant broadband transport fees to other carriers to facilitate high-speed access for its membership. The new all-terrestrial line will lower transport expenses, provide a secure and reliable route to the contiguous U.S. and provide Alaska with a stable internet transport connection. It is a long-term solution to give MTA and its members access to internet capacity while giving the option to reinvest funds in other parts of the company to better improve technology access.

“This new terrestrial network will ensure the future viability and growth of the internet in Alaska,” said Burke. “Alaska’s leaders have talked about a terrestrial fiber optic path out of the state for more than 20 years. We are pleased to be the ones to be able to make this a reality. This will be a major win for the people who live, play and work in Alaska, supporting business, job growth, and ultimately, the state’s economy.”

MTA Fiber Holdings has secured partnerships with Canadian carriers in order to extend MTA’s existing network from North Pole, Alaska, through Canada and on to any major hub in the United States. Only traffic that both originates and terminates in the United States will be carried over MTA Fiber Holdings’ all-fiber network.

Construction of the new terrestrial fiber line has commenced and will continue throughout 2019, with a goal of being completed by the middle of 2020.

MTA Partners With Hatcher Alpine Xperience To Bring Connectivity to Skeetawk Ski Area

MTA To ‘Light Up’ the Mountain With Fiber for Skeetawk, Set To Open For 2019-2020 Season

Palmer, Alaska – December 19, 2018 – MTA, Alaska’s premier technology company, announced today that it will become the official communications partner of Hatcher Alpine Xperience (HAX), a nonprofit, member-driven organization working to bring lift-access, downhill skiing, boarding and other alpine sports to Hatcher Pass through its new alpine ski area, Skeetawk.

MTA will power Skeetawk’s data, video, voice and other communications with fiber connectivity, ensuring fast, safe, and reliable communication needs for those mountain enthusiasts looking to plug in and connect between trips down the area’s 6+ miles of trails. Additionally, MTA has committed to a three-year sponsorship of Skeetawk’s Ski Patrol, fully outfitting them with the tools and equipment necessary to ensure the safety of those on the mountain.

The fiber extension that makes this partnership possible is leading the way for larger opportunity for economic development in Alaska, further expanding MTA’s goal of providing the means necessary to create more plugged-in and technologically intelligent communities throughout the state.

Skeetawk is a result of HAX’s years-long work toward bringing a downhill ski area to the Talkeetna Mountains northwest of Palmer, Alaska. Hatcher Pass, a destination known for its early-season snow, gorgeous mountain views and terrain ideal for winter sports and activities.

The volunteer-driven HAX received a $500,000 grant from the Mat-Su Health Foundation in late 2017, which was just released after raising matching funds through MTA, Mat-Su Trails and Parks Foundation, MEA Charitable Foundation, North Lakes Community Council, and a $350,000 grant from the Rasmuson Foundation in 2018, in addition to funds from various private members, donors and sponsors. Skeetawk aiming to open for the 2019-20 ski season.

“When we were deciding how to approach our communications planning for Skeetawk, we valued fast, safe, reliable service and a great all-around partner above all else, so handing the communications aspect to a trusted company like MTA was a no-brainer,” said Amy O’Connor, Executive Director of HAX. “Their fiber connectivity allows us to showcase our new community-focused ski area, allowing our visitors to share their positive experience and smiles with the world while also providing us the necessary connections to keep our guests safe upon its opening.”

“The process that has brought this amazing new alpine ski area to Hatcher Pass has been inspiring, and MTA is honored to be serving as its official communications partner,” said Michael Burke, CEO of MTA. “MTA takes pride in helping aid economic expansion throughout Alaska, and this ski area is a prime example of that. The whole MTA family is excited to be a part of this major new destination, and we are looking forward to hitting the slopes ourselves when Skeetawk is open later next year.”

2020 MTA Gaming Tournament Announces Special Guest Gordon Hayward

A while back, we teased the appearance of a special guest at our 2020 Virtual Gaming Tournament. As this year’s tournament nears, we’re excited to finally introduce you to this year’s special guest: NBA superstar and longtime esports enthusiast Gordon Hayward!

That’s right, when Gordon is not sinking shots for the Celtics, he’s online and live streaming his numerous conquests as he plays Valorant.

A natural-born athlete with a fiery competitive side, Gordon entered the world of esports by competing in local Halo tournaments with some of his close friends. From there, he began to get more involved in PC gaming. On the court, Gordon gains his competitive advantage by anticipating the actions of his defenders. Online, things are not much different, and he uses this same advantage to carry himself, or his team, to victory.

Gordon’s passion for esports has led to him investing in mobile esports company Tribe Gaming. Knowing how much he loves gaming, his goal with this initiative was to help deliver the thrills and experiences he’s encountered to more people around the world.

At MTA, we aim to connect technology to the world around us; whether that’s through education, community initiatives and now physical sports. Our esports offerings have allowed us to do just that. We’re beyond excited to host Gordon Hayward at this year’s tournament because of his passion and understanding of the importance of esports, and for the unique perspective he will bring.

Registration for this year’s tournament is still open, and you can sign up here to select the bracket(s) you wish to participate in. Make sure to also share the Twitch live-stream information with friends and family to watch you compete – and to see what an NBA star has to say about some of this year’s participants!

Bridging Virtual Victory with On-The-Ground Support: Giving Back to the Community with MTA Gaming

By: Brandon Meiners, MTA Esports Coordinator

On May 1, MTA Gaming successfully hosted the Virtual Victory esports tournament, its first official event under its new brand. Bringing Alaskans together to duke it out over Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the event helped build connections and support our community during what is a difficult and isolated time for many.

With nearly 40 gamers participating, a live Twitch stream and play-by-play commentary, and a total of $300 up for grabs among the top three winners, Virtual Victory lasted nearly six hours. The event was a great success and set the tone for future MTA Gaming events, both digital and in-person.

Giving Back Beyond the Screen

Successful on the screens, the Virtual Victory tournament was a win for our community, too. In total, the tournament raised $2,000 for both Wasilla Area Seniors, Inc. and the Mat-Su Seniors Center, helping the latter continue delivering food to seniors through its Meals on Wheels program.

MTA Gaming works in two ways: uniting our community through a shared activity and giving back to our community members. And in our current situation, many of our older residents are vulnerable, in need of support and connection. Adapting the model of our esports programming means we can better help meet their needs.

Integrating esports into older adults’ lives isn’t always a seamless transition, but many older adults in our community are technologically adept or curious to learn more. Even for those who aren’t, their needs are still important. Evolving MTA Gaming tournaments into an engine to drive donations back into the community also helps us bridge the tournament’s impact for Alaska’s gaming community with a meaningful impact for all of the surrounding residents of the Mat-Su Valley.

The success of this tournament and being able to give back so much to our community as a result illustrate an important point: technology enables and powers connections between people in many dimensions. We’ve seen this over and over again through our constant collaboration and relationship building with local businesses, our esports partnership with the Mat-Su Borough School District and hosting Alaska’s largest esports tournament for the gaming community.

We are excited to keep planning and growing our Virtual Victory esports series with more tournaments and more contributions to help the community. For more details on MTA Gaming and future events, stay up to date at https://www.mtasolutions.com/esports/.

Matanuska Telecom Association (MTA) Completes New Leg of Historic Terrestrial Fiber Connection from Alaska to Canada and Chicago

Large businesses and government entities that work between Alaska and the Lower 48 will have new options for operations, access to cloud providers

Palmer, Alaska – September 13, 2022 – Matanuska Telecom Association (MTA), Alaska’s best choice for technology and communications, has completed the first and only all-terrestrial fiber route between Alaska and Chicago. The project, an extension of the historic AlCan ONE line, brings an additional secure, geographically diverse, high-speed connection between Anchorage, Wasilla and Fairbanks to Calgary and Chicago, as well as to Seattle and Portland.

“MTA is proud to be facilitating the vibrant enterprise, education and government industries to be even stronger and more capable with our new Alaska to Chicago connection,” said Michael Burke, CEO of MTA. “Communications needs are changing every year, so this secure and reliable option is critical to the growth of businesses in Alaska and across the country.”

In 2020, MTA completed its AlCan ONE (Alaska Canada Overland Network), a 300-mile, all-terrestrial fiber network connecting North Pole, Alaska to the Canadian border – and ultimately providing MTA’s members, as well as Alaska as a whole, with a robust internet transport connection for decades to come. Since then, the co-operative has worked with Canadian partners to extend the network and establish POPs in Calgary and Chicago.

“In the past, we’ve been vulnerable to the possibility that a disaster or crisis could render Alaska cut off from the rest of the world,” said Francis LaChapelle, Vice President of Business Development for MTA. “MTA knew Alaska needed an alternative to relying on undersea fiber cable communications that pass through the Pacific Northwest, and now we have it.  Expanding our terrestrial network to Chicago allows MTA to meet the need for fast and survivable telecommunications to the Midwest and East Coast.”

MTA’s new system gives Alaska a faster connection to the Midwest and East Coast, with a 20-25% reduction in round-trip latency between Alaska and Chicago. It also provides a direct connection to diverse cloud regions— Microsoft Azure Government cloud in Chicago and the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud coming to Calgary in 2023.

MTA Announces MTA Shield to Provide Device and WiFi Security for Members

The new suite of three apps provides device protection and puts members in charge of their information security

Palmer, Alaska – August 18, 2020 – MTA, Alaska’s best choice for technology and communications products, has announced the release of MTA Shield, a suite of three apps that puts members in charge of their WiFi and protects their devices.

MTA Shield provides unique privacy features to keep members’ data private both at home and on the go, a variety of user management tools, as well as identity protection features. When combined with MTA’s totalWiFi package, members will have greater peace of mind than ever before when it comes to their data security and privacy.

The three apps that create MTA Shield complement and strengthen each other:

Shield Home

MTA Home Shield works with MTA’s totalWiFi gateway and provides advanced transparency and protection for members’ entire WiFi network. In addition to preventing attacks on WiFi devices, it also offers content filtering, device and user management. It also provides the ability to set rules, such as screen time limits and pausing WiFi access during certain times for all or specific devices.

Mobile Shield

MTA Mobile Shield can be used at home and on the go. Downloaded directly to members’ mobile devices, it performs virus and malware scans and offers tools for safe browsing.

Identity Shield

MTA Identity Shield prevents members’ personal information from ending up in the wrong places by detecting when their identity information is at risk and helping them take action. It also helps members create and store stronger passwords.

Following cybersecurity classes MTA offered to members, the co-op created MTA Shield as an advanced cybersecurity tool that is easy and reliable for members to use.

“We’re constantly trying to better understand our members, their lifestyles and challenges, and create meaningful solutions to empower them to live more connected lives, and we know that the internet and our members’ connected devices can be vulnerable to forces outside of their control,” said Michael Burke, MTA’s CEO. “MTA prides itself on being a compassionate co-op, and believes it is our responsibility to talk about the real need for data security and privacy and provide our members a solution. As a leading technology provider in the fast-growing state of Alaska, we always strive to meet our customers changing needs, we are proud to offer these important privacy tools to ensure they can keep their data secure and WiFi manageable.”

In creating the MTA Shield suite, MTA teamed up with global cybersecurity leader F-Secure, which works with top channel partners and over 200 service providers to ensure the enterprise-level security of businesses throughout the world.

“The undeniable benefits that come from connecting more and more of our lives unfortunately can put our home networks, our devices, and even our identities at risk,” said Brian Murray, F-Secure’s Regional Head of Consumer Security for North America. “Securing against these risks needs to be as painless and practical as connecting a new device. The solutions in this suite combine to provide MTA members the power to easily secure their families at home, and anywhere they go.”

A New Look for MTA, Inspired by You

By Kerry Youngren, Marketing Manager

As the leading technology provider in Alaska, we know our work is constantly evolving – and never done. Whether it’s completing large-scale network upgrades that will connect Alaskans for generations, or taking the lead during times of crisis, MTA has been committed to serving the communities we live in for nearly 70 years.

MTA has come a long way from our founding in 1953. And we know what’s to come: better, stronger connections to each other, powered by the network we’ve designed and constructed for the areas we serve. That area has also grown, with Alaska being more high-tech and forward-looking than ever before.

As we advance with our community, we want to make it clear that this progression is inspired solely by you, our members, and your needs. This path toward the future is represented in a recent modernization to MTA’s look-and-feel and the launch of our new website that we are proud to share with you.

Our members are not static, and as we develop new solutions and enter new markets, the way we present our brand must constantly adapt to our ever-evolving audience while staying true to our Alaskan roots.

Different from a rebrand, these enhancements are designed to breathe life into what is already there. And all of this is more than just a new mix of colors, fonts, and a website. Our goal with this launch is to modernize and unify our brand, while staying true to our mission. It includes better online communication and introduces unique, meaningful experiences for residential, business, enterprise, and wholesale customers.

But before we decided on the new brand direction, we did our homework. (Being MTA, would you expect anything less?) This included research within our service area as well as taking a close look at the core values of MTA as a brand and where we’ve been.

Where we’ve been:
Where we’re going:

Right now, we are truly entering a new era for MTA: we completed the historic AlCan ONE all-terrestrial fiber line, which will provide a secure connection to the lower 48 and beyond for decades; we’ve cut the cord on traditional TV and ushered our members to a streaming lifestyle; we’ve expanded into new markets with the introduction of unique, meaningful experiences for residential, business, enterprise and wholesale customers; and we’re delivering an elevated online experience with new products like totalWiFi and MTA Shield.

In short, it’s the perfect time to revamp our identity. There’s new energy and focus from the Alaskan tech and business community and our products and services lead the charge in enabling this exploration. Our brand refresh visually symbolizes our commitment to innovate.

Of course, we could not have done this work alone. We worked alongside our creative partner Alopex, a Palmer-based agency that is leading the way for web development and design in the state.

Alopex is one of many innovative and outstanding companies that have sprouted up in Alaska as of late; with more and more businesses launching in the Palmer area, Alaska’s tech future is bright and we are eager to work alongside them – and be inspired by them – in years to come.

Education is the Key to Closing the Digital Divide

By Wanda Tankersley, COO

Education, at any level, allows us to learn and refine valuable skills that help us in our everyday lives. It provides a whole window of experiences and opportunities that one might not otherwise have.

In today’s digital age, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a vital component to accelerating both technological literacy and innovation throughout our communities. Unfortunately, there can be barriers in place that prevent equitable access to this type of education.

MTA is committed to tackling these education disparities across the communities we serve in order to level the playing field and bring us one step closer to closing the digital divide. A large way we’re able to do this is through the MTA Foundation, which exists to promote technology awareness, economic development and enhance entrepreneurship by way of grants, scholarships and other donations.

The Foundation’s annual scholarship program is designed to encourage students to pursue a variety of educational goals – whether they’re first-time college students, returning students, those participating in vocational or homeschool programs or students pursuing professional development that leads to a degree or certification. The scholarships support these students as they enhance their technology, business and entrepreneurial skills.

However, the importance of education also extends outside of the classroom. Closing the digital divide across our communities goes beyond just providing access to necessary technology or internet connectivity.

The Foundation also awards grants and donations to businesses and organizations within our communities to not only provide them with innovative technology, but to also educate them on how to use this technology to set them up for success.

To date, the Foundation has awarded almost $420,000 in scholarship funding to help mold the next generation of Alaska’s leaders, as well as over $60,000 in grants to empower local businesses and organizations. We love the community we call home and we firmly believe in investing in education to support members and help bridge this gap.
