Alert To MTA Members | Email Scam Claiming To Be From MTA

Did you get an email asking you to update your MTA payment method? It wasn’t from us. Some customers have reported a fake email attempting to appear to be from “MTA Customer Service.” This phishing scam prompts individuals to update their payment information on a landing page that appears to be myMTA, but is not hosted or affiliated with MTA in any way.

Keep an eye out for suspicious-looking texts or emails requesting updated account info, updated payment details or posing as MTA customer service. If any come your way, please delete them and do not follow any links. You can also report them to the FTC here. Below is some information on what you should do if you receive an email like this and tips to help keep your online information safe.

Tips for recognizing spam or malicious emails.
  • Company logos appear distorted.
  • Your name isn’t used. Instead generic verbiage like “attention customer” or “dear sir” is used as the email greeting.
  • The origination email is not the company address (i.e. official MTA communications will only include addresses ending in @mtaonline.net; @mtasolutions.com or @mta-telco.com).
  • Grammar is very poor and words are often spelled incorrectly.
  • The requests for information come suddenly without reason.
  • MTA will never ask for personal information via text or email.
  • If there is a link in the email – hover over it to see what the actual landing page is.
  • If the landing page is not my.mtasolutions.com – it is not our customer portal.
What should I do if I clicked a link or provided personal information?
  • Reset your myMTA password to a new one that is strong and unique to that account.
  • Change any other account password that used similar credentials (email and password).
  • Contact your bank if you shared any payment information as it might have been compromised.
Safety tips to help keep your online information safe.

Never open an attachment or click any links in a suspicious looking email – delete it.

When in doubt if an email or request is legitimate, contact our support team directly at 745-6821. They are available 24/7/365.

Esports have gained significant momentum throughout Alaska over the years and MTA is proud to continue leading this charge. Our annual esports tournament has played a critical role in deepening connections between education and technology while serving as a hub connecting Alaskans through competitive gaming and community building.

After a widely successful event in 2019, with the turnout more than doubling from 2018, we’re thrilled to experience this year’s event right alongside you.

Despite the hurdles our communities have been facing amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we know the event must go on – nothing can stop MTA Gaming! So, to ensure we keep all our participants and community members safe, we’ve decided to take our 2020 Gaming Tournament virtual. As one of our most popular and fastest growing events, we couldn’t be more confident that this year’s tournament will be a landmark one in the evolution of MTA Gaming, and in our journey to help our community stay connected while staying home.

Spread out over three days, this year’s tournament will feature even more games, competition, community partners and even a few special guests. Additionally, various gaming brackets are available so that those of all skill levels have the chance to compete. The fun kicks off on Friday, November 6 and lasts until Sunday, November 8, with a variety of prizes available each day. The schedule for the weekend will be as follows:

Registration is now open for all three days. The first 100 gamers to register will automatically be entered to win a RESPAWN Gaming Mouse Pad Table! The lucky winner will be announced the week prior to the tournament. To register, go here and select the bracket(s) you wish to participate in. Once registered, make sure to share the Twitch live-stream information with friends and family to watch you compete.

If you’ve never participated in a gaming tournament, connect with fellow Alaskan (and beyond!) gamers on Discord to immerse yourself in the community. Additionally, we’re creating a series of video tutorials that lay out everything you need to know as you navigate our online tournament – stay tuned for more information.

Whether we’re all in the same space or just in the same virtual space, participants like you are the reason for the continuously growing success of MTA Gaming and esports in Alaska, and we can’t wait for this year’s edition!

“One Ring” Scam Robocalls

SCAMMERS LOOKING TO DEFRAUD CONSUMERS BY PROMPTING EXPENSIVE CALL BACK

Consumers Should Not Call Back Unknown Late-Night Callers Using the ‘222’ West African Country Code

The Federal Communications Commission is alerting consumers to reported waves of “One Ring” or “Wangiri” scam robocalls targeting specific area codes in bursts, often calling multiple times in the middle of the night.  These calls are likely trying to prompt consumers to call the number back, often resulting in per minute toll charges similar to a 900 number.   Consumers should not call these numbers back.

Recent reports indicate these calls are using the “222” country code of the West African nation of Mauritania.  News reports have indicated widespread overnight calling in New York State and Arizona.

Generally, the One Ring scam takes place when a robocaller calls a number and hangs up after a ring or two.  They may call repeatedly, hoping the consumer calls back and runs up a toll that is largely paid to the scammer.

Consumer Tips:

– Do not call back numbers you do not recognize, especially those appearing to originate overseas.
– File a complaint with the FCC if you received these calls: fcc.gov/complaints
– If you never make international calls, consider talking to your phone company about blocking outbound international calls to prevent accidental toll calls.
– Check your phone bill for charges you don’t recognize.

Advances in technology allow massive amounts of calls to be made cheaply and easily.  In addition, spoofing tools make it easy for scammers to mask their identity.  Another key tool is consumer education like this alert and the FCC’s One Ring scam consumer guide: https://t.co/pROJ0ldMXv

Alert MTA Members

Scammers are spoofing the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) 1-800 customer service number to try to get personal information.

Here’s how it works: Your phone rings. Your caller ID shows that it’s the SSA calling from 1-800-772-1213. The caller says he/she works for the Social Security Administration and needs your personal information – like your Social Security number – to increase your benefits payments. (Or they threatens to cut off your benefits if you don’t give the information.)

According to the FTC, 1-800-772-1213 is the SSA’s real phone number, but the scammers on the phone are spoofing the number to make the call look real.

The FTC offers the following tips to combat this latest scam:

If you get one of these calls, Hang up!

The SSA will not threaten you. Real SSA employees will never threaten you to get personal information. They also won’t promise to increase your benefits in exchange for information. If they do, it’s a scam.

If you have any doubt, hang up and call SSA directly. If you dial the number, you know who you’re getting. If a call comes in from that number, you can’t be sure it’s really Social Security Administration calling.

If you get a spoofed call, report it. If someone calls, claiming to be from SSA and asking for information like your Social Security number, report it to SSA’s Office of Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271 or https://oig.ssa.gov/report.

You can also report these calls to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint
