Education is the Key to Closing the Digital Divide

By Wanda Tankersley, COO

Education, at any level, allows us to learn and refine valuable skills that help us in our everyday lives. It provides a whole window of experiences and opportunities that one might not otherwise have.

In today’s digital age, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a vital component to accelerating both technological literacy and innovation throughout our communities. Unfortunately, there can be barriers in place that prevent equitable access to this type of education.

MTA is committed to tackling these education disparities across the communities we serve in order to level the playing field and bring us one step closer to closing the digital divide. A large way we’re able to do this is through the MTA Foundation, which exists to promote technology awareness, economic development and enhance entrepreneurship by way of grants, scholarships and other donations.

The Foundation’s annual scholarship program is designed to encourage students to pursue a variety of educational goals – whether they’re first-time college students, returning students, those participating in vocational or homeschool programs or students pursuing professional development that leads to a degree or certification. The scholarships support these students as they enhance their technology, business and entrepreneurial skills.

However, the importance of education also extends outside of the classroom. Closing the digital divide across our communities goes beyond just providing access to necessary technology or internet connectivity.

The Foundation also awards grants and donations to businesses and organizations within our communities to not only provide them with innovative technology, but to also educate them on how to use this technology to set them up for success.

To date, the Foundation has awarded almost $420,000 in scholarship funding to help mold the next generation of Alaska’s leaders, as well as over $60,000 in grants to empower local businesses and organizations. We love the community we call home and we firmly believe in investing in education to support members and help bridge this gap.

MTA Gaming Takes Alaska Esports to New Heights

By: Jess Gilbert, PR Manager

After winning the 2020 Best Virtual Event by Alaska Business Magazine, we knew we had to level up in 2021. We did just that with Alaska’s first Esports League. The MTA Gaming efforts have always been about cultivating a strong, tech-forward community of passionate gamers. That community told us they wanted more than one weekend, and we delivered.

Spanning multiple weeks, the inaugural season officially began November 15, with championship rounds that took place January 29 & 30 at the MTA Gaming Virtual Tournament. This season’s games included Fortnite, APEX Legends, Super Smash Bros, Rocket League and League of Legends.

Adding to the fun, we had some special guests join us – former Seahawks player, Luke Willson, and Logan Kimmell, with Kimmell Gaming. As avid gamers themselves, both are passionate about the way gaming can bring people together – whether they’re an NFL player, a teacher, a student or anyone else. We had the chance to interview both Luke and Logan during the tournament, check it out below!

As our returning competitors already know, the pandemic forced us to host 2020’s tournament virtually for the first time. Though this could’ve been a major setback, we instead saw it as an opportunity to take both MTA Gaming and our valued community of esports enthusiasts to new heights.

It’s because of the unwavering support from you – our fans and sponsors – that we were able to embark on this entirely new journey. But it’s also because of you that we get to better the communities we serve.

Since its inception, our annual gaming tournament has served as a signature event to benefit the MTA Foundation, which provides scholarships, donations, grants and other tech assistance throughout Alaska. This year, we managed to raise more than $33,000, with special thanks to our Elite sponsors Ciena and Monster Energy.

MTA Gaming certainly made a virtual splash last year, but this year we created a tidal wave. We’re already looking forward to everything in store for the 2022-23 season!

On MTA’s decision to exit the Fixed Wireless business

Published in the Frontiersman, Sunday, February 25, 2018.

MTA is keeping pace with the evolving communications industry. From humble beginnings in 1953 as a rural cooperative, MTA has sought to serve as many Alaskans as possible and thrive throughout a time packed full of technological advances.

That same philosophy holds true in today’s technology-driven marketplace. The wireless industry is highly competitive and changing rapidly, requiring a tremendous amount of continual infrastructure investment. After a thorough review, MTA made the decision to exit the wireless market. MTA must use its resources wisely and resist the temptation to provide service to a small segment of the population at a tremendous cost to the majority of member-owners. Our business decisions must represent the entire base of our member’s interests.

On the heels of this decision, came the decision to end our Fixed Wireless service to a remote section of the Susitna Basin. This service is an out-of-date technology that is failing at an increasing rate. It was delivered by the wireless spectrum and tower infrastructure that MTA owned while operating as a wireless carrier. Recently, MTA sold its towers and spectrum as a result of exiting the competitive wireless arena.

Some question if the decision to end Fixed Wireless service to remote customers is counter to the cooperative spirit. In reality, the cooperative model requires organizations like MTA to make business decisions that are beneficial to the entire member base, such as exiting the wireless business. All of MTA’s decisions are grounded in our mission to be Alaska’s leading broadband technology company, to dedicate resources necessary to preserve the cooperative and pioneer critical economic development opportunities for the community.

Today’s wireless carriers and satellite communications companies specialize in delivering voice and internet service to the most remote locations. MTA’s research confirmed that satellite service is available to virtually all customers currently receiving Fixed Wireless service. In the alternative, Fixed Wireless customers can install an antenna comparable to the existing Fixed Wireless antenna to facilitate delivery of superior LTE wireless service to their homes.

MTA is a vibrant cooperative. The decision to exit the fixed wireless business was difficult, but necessary to preserve the resources of the remaining 99% of the cooperative. MTA has provided financial and technical assistance to affected customers to ease the transition.

This information will provide MTA Fixed Wireless customers with potential alternative solutions. Learn more.

BMMA Announces Winners of 2021 Best in Class Marketing Awards

Shielded Network

MTA Shield was launched through a partnership between MTA and F-Secure, and was successfully rolled out in a tight three-month timeframe thanks to extensive research and the teams’ mutual dedication to educating and empowering customers. The two companies launched MTA Home Shield (secure router), MTA Mobile Shield (endpoint protection) and MTA Identity Shield (identity protection/password manager) with single-sign-on (SSO) implemented across all three products using MTA’s existing myMTA account structure. The partnership has continued through internal and external campaigns, agent training, agent events, and more.

“Thanks to F-Secure’s thorough efforts, comprehensive project plan and dedicated launch team, we were able to keep to the launch timeline as planned and successfully roll out this vital product to our members,” said Jonathan Babbitt, MTA’s V.P. of Product Management, Marketing and Sales.

While MTA Shield has only been available for a few months, its initial success and impact is significant. A good portion of the success so far is directly attributable to two major launch activities: the first being the research that MTA performed at the beginning of the project, which helped to ensure the product met the needs of the Alaska market in everything from pricing to the product’s names; the second major activity focused on training. MTA’s agents know why cybersecurity is important, both at home and on the go, and they’ve been able to educate customers while identifying the best product bundle for each family’s lifestyle. This combination of research and training has allowed MTA to be extremely successful with the new MTA Shield suite of products.

MTA Shield ensures members’ devices are safe and secure, and that their personal data is not at risk; this is invaluable in today’s world. Understanding the importance of this, MTA decided to make MTA Shield free to all its employees. F-Secure, aware of the impact that it would have on sales and support experience as well as word-of-mouth, fully supported the effort. This effort will continue to ensure that MTA employees continue to grow as champions of all three products.

“MTA’s focus on understanding their members needs and informing their agents have helped make this launch a huge success,” said Brian Murray, F-Secure’s Regional Vice President for North America, Operator Sales. “The solutions in this suite combine to provide MTA members the power to easily secure their families at home, and anywhere they go. We’re proud to join with MTA in accepting this award, and we’re even prouder to help give their members the freedom that comes from being in control of all your information security.”

2020 MTA Gaming Tournament Takes Alaska Virtually by Storm

Recently, MTA Gaming kicked off its annual gaming tournament a little different than usual. But even virtually, this year’s tournament took Alaska by storm!

The event ran for a total of three days, making it MTA’s first-ever multi-day event, and had 171 attendees log on to battle it out over Valorant, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Tekken 7. Our largest gaming bracket was Valorant presented by Ciena, and this ended up being the largest Valorant tournament in all of Alaska to date.

Despite the physical separation this year, we know that students have been searching for ways to connect with their community and engage in something that they’re passionate about, and this year’s tournament allowed them to do just that. This virtual event also provided students in the Alaskan community (and beyond) the unique opportunity to connect with professionals in the broader world of both technology and now professional sports.

That leads us to this year’s special guest – NBA superstar and longtime esports enthusiast Gordon Hayward. We were so grateful for Gordon’s commentary throughout the tournament, and that he was able to share his passion for esports with members of our community.

Giving Back Beyond the Screen

While this three-day extravaganza resulted in nearly 20 hours of total gameplay and 900 unique viewers, we also received an overwhelming amount of support from our nearly 40 sponsors. With nearly $30,000 raised for the MTA Foundation, and incredible prizes gifted to our participants, we’d say our community as a whole came out on top this year.

MTA Gaming operates on two very important principles; bringing Alaska together in a unique way while also giving back to our community members who are in need of it most, especially now. And while things were a little different this year due to the pandemic, new doors were opened and the stage has been set for future MTA Gaming tournaments, whether in-person or virtual.

After the success we saw this year, we hope to keep this virtual momentum going. There are so many connections to be made between technology and the world around us, and events like this help prove that. Technology enables unique connections between many different dimensions, whether that’s education, community initiatives or even NBA stars. Above all, these events allow us to give back to the community that made us who we are, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the future of MTA Gaming.

Why MTA Is Helping Our Members Cut The Cord

The way we watch TV is changing, and more and more people are ditching cable TV in favor of the increasing number of streaming services available at their fingertips.

This cord-cutting is nothing new, but the trends we’ve seen have been ticking up faster and faster, indicating a major shift:

• Over the last eight years, cord-cutting in the U.S. has increased by 48 percent.
• The number of cord-cutters in the U.S. is expected to reach 55.1 million by 2022
• Just because you’re cutting the cord doesn’t mean you’re watching less: streaming platform Roku found that 80 percent of cord-cutters say they watch the same, if not more, TV than they did before cord-cutting and moving to Roku.

MTA remains proactive in guiding our customers through this shift, helping members figure out the right time to move from cable TV to a streaming service. When that time comes, once we help you cut the cord, we then help you decide which streaming service is right for you (and your wallet).

While it may seem unusual for a telecommunications company to advise members to move on from cable TV, our priority is ensuring our members are as educated and up-to-speed as possible on their viewing options. To do this, we regularly invite MTA and community members to come check out these options themselves at a monthly product showcase.

This month we’re inviting our community to join us at the Menard Sports Center on May 22 for our monthly product showcase or on June 5 for one of two showcases during our 2019 Annual Meeting.

These are part of our monthly DTV Product Showcase series, in which we demonstrate all of the great premium streaming services we offer so that our members can find out exactly which product is right for them and clear up any questions they might have about the transition from cable to streaming television.

The choice of whether to cut the cord or not is up to you, but if you take the plunge, we at MTA are here to help you through every step.

Co-Op Month: By the Community, For the Community

Is Co-Op Just A Buzz Word?
By Michael Burke, MTA CEO

With smoke clouds billowing and flames threatening infrastructure around the Mat-Su Valley, the fires that broke out this summer were devastating to our community.

Yet, in the face of this loss and damage, our MTA employees, many of whom are residents of the Mat-Su Valley and the areas hardest hit by fires, were out on the ground, working hard to thoroughly ensure that reliable internet service persisted – despite dangerous conditions.

The widely-recognized rapid response of MTA employees to make sure communities and MTA members around the Mat-Su Valley were able to stay safe and connected was a window into the ongoing work our co-op does to manage interruptions created by natural disasters such as fire, earthquakes and, of course, Alaska’s winter weather systems. But being a co-op is about more than that.

As we enter October, we welcome cooler weather and, hopefully, a respite from any additional fires this season. We also welcome Co-Op Month, a month dedicated to honoring co-ops and the benefits of community-owned and community-led business models.

This year’s theme for Co-Op Month is “By the community, for the community.” This theme is based on the notion that community solutions and improvements are best designed when driven by the people who live in and hail from those communities, and we couldn’t agree more.

But for everyone who knows us at MTA, it’s clear that “by the community, for the community” lasts longer than a month. We’ve seen this again and again, as we did with our employees who were out mitigating the damages from this summer’s fires and last year’s earthquake and whatever Alaskan winters throw our way. But we also see that our members are our community. Being a 100% wholly-owned co-op, MTA is committed to giving back to the communities we serve. Our members live, work and play in the communities we serve, and we do our best to really ensure we live up to what it means to be a co-op.

What It Means To Be a Co-Op

Of course, what it means to be a co-op can vary across place or size and context. Broadly speaking, co-ops are groups of people united to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and goals. There are various kinds of co-ops, but notably, consumer co-ops like MTA are businesses that are operated and managed by the people who use their services. This allows us to use our unique infrastructure and services to help enhance the lives of many residents in a way that best meets their needs and goals in their communities.

There are many benefits of being both member-owned and operated. Without external shareholders, MTA and co-ops like us are able to care about meeting members’ needs. Since our members elect our board of directors, and our board of directors are our members, there’s a great synergy of respect and responsibility to community needs going on throughout our management.

All of these operational nuances and benefits are not without reward. MTA’s co-op model also helps generate jobs in communities around the Mat-Su Valley, and we keep profits local and pay local taxes to help support community services in our region.

Co-ops have grown in both popularity and influence. According to the Cooperative Network and the University of Wisconsin’s Center for Cooperatives, there are more than 40,000 cooperative businesses in the U.S., comprising a membership of 350 million and $514 billion in revenue. Numbers aside, we work to go above and beyond to make sure “co-op” is more than just a trend on Twitter, or a novel idea spotlighted in the news. We make the effort to understand our members who live in and utilize our service areas, since they are ultimately the people who operate our business.

Focused On The Community

MTA does not merely “talk the talk,” when it comes to being a co-op. We are 100% member-owned, and we take our commitment to the communities we serve to heart, ensuring we “walk the walk” at all times to really show up for our members and communities.

And show up we do: if you’re involved in the Mat-Su Valley community, you’ll know that we are too. We host a monthly product showcase aimed at educating our members and the community on the ever-growing list of streaming options available, while hosting standalone tech education for seniors to make sure they are enjoying MTA’s wide variety of tech options as much as anyone else.

We also have an ongoing presence at beloved community events. One of the major events we participate in, the annual summertime Bear Paw Festival in Eagle River, is not to be missed. We have been an ongoing sponsor of the festival for years, and this year’s edition was another rousing good time. Our community events are a highlight for us, and we always love getting to meet and hear from our members in person.

It’s not enough for us to simply be seen out in the community, though. MTA also creates a community. Our role in growing esports throughout the Mat-Su Valley and across Alaska has helped establish the state as hub for all things gaming and esports, and our recent eUnlimited BYTE Gaming Tournament on October 5 surpassed previous events in terms of attendance and awareness.

We could go on, but our message for Co-Op Month is clear – MTA would not be possible without our community, which is why each and every one of our actions is tailored to the needs and goals of our community. We look forward to serving you, and with you, in the months and years to come.

Planting the Seeds of Alaska’s Connected Future

May 26, 2020
By: Michael Burke, MTA CEO

Today, MTA Fiber Holdings, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MTA, completed construction and officially commissioned AlCan ONE (Alaska Canada Overland Network), the first and only all-terrestrial fiber network connecting Alaska to the contiguous United States and beyond.

AlCan ONE began construction in spring 2019, and with its completion, it establishes a secure, reliable fiber connection to any point in the contiguous United States. The line runs nearly 300 miles from North Pole, Alaska, to the Canadian border. From there, it connects with Canadian internet carriers, extending MTA’s existing network through Canada and on to major hubs in the Lower 48.

As our game-changing AlCan ONE fiber network comes to life today, our role in growing Alaska’s internet capacity digs even deeper into Alaska’s internet landscape.

Telecom Leaders Can Learn from Landscape Architects

When landscape architects start out looking at a plot of land, they have vision. They’ll consider and plan for the space, and then they’ll dig in, planting and designing a future, with a scenic oasis emerging over the years. In the early days of a garden or landscaped space, it’s hard to see what seeds or the tiniest of sprouts will become. But, where the average person might not see potential, landscape architects have vision. They trust their talents, knowing there’ll be a beautiful landscape that will grow up and into the space.

All of us at MTA work in telecommunications, but, in a way, we’re also like landscape architects. We have technological vision. In building the AlCan ONE network, we are laying the groundwork to meet our communities’ needs for today, while ensuring we meet internet demand and help Alaska’s economy, businesses and people grow and thrive in the future. We trust our digital capabilities and know what’s to come: better, stronger connections to each other, powered by the network we’ve designed and constructed.

For our members – as well as Alaskans across the state – AlCan ONE’s completion today means you’ll now benefit from a robust internet transport connection. And, as our state grows and demand for internet capacity increases, the network’s capabilities will scale, with potential to expand in capacity to more than 100 terabits per second.

The successful commissioning of AlCan ONE is not just a win for MTA – it is a win for all of the people and businesses of Alaska. We could not have completed this groundbreaking project without the help of other telecom carriers, communities, businesses and legislators who helped make this possible, and we’re confident that the benefits of this highly successful project will be felt by all.

We look forward to developing partnerships with telecommunications organizations across the state to plant even more seeds for the success of Alaska’s internet future and to further maximize the value of AlCan ONE for all Alaskans.

International Day of Co-Ops: Rebuild Better Together

A co-operative (co-op) is a people-centric organization, run by and for its members, that aims to achieve a variety of common goals. For all of us at MTA, we take the “people-centric” aspect pretty seriously. This year’s theme for International Day of Co-Ops revolves around working together to rebuild; working with you, our members, is something we’ve been doing since our inception back in 1953.

Our 100% wholly owned co-op was established with the purpose to serve the communities our members live, work and play in. Though we’ve evolved significantly since then, from a telecom company to the tech powerhouse we are today, this core value hasn’t changed.

Over the past 68 years, we’ve witnessed Alaska transform before our very eyes. The fact is that our great state is currently the most high-tech and forward-looking it’s ever been, and we remain committed to taking every action we can to continue this advancement.

As with any co-op, we recognize that the needs of our members are constantly changing. Because of this, we must remain dynamic to adapt to these changes, while keeping our core values in check.

In the past decade alone, we’ve accomplished an incredible amount to empower our members, and our communities, to live their most connected lives.

We began, and completed, construction on the historic AlCan ONE all-terrestrial fiber line, which establishes a secure connection to the lower 48 and beyond for decades to come. We unveiled an innovative line of products, such as totalWiFi and MTA Shield, to continue elevating the online experience while keeping our members safe. We officially cut the cord on traditional cable TV, ushering our members into a future full of unending possibilities with streaming. We tapped into new markets by introducing extraordinary solutions for residential, business, enterprise and wholesale customers. We even refreshed our brand to reflect our unwavering commitment to innovation.

But as we reflect on all of this success, we owe it to each and every one of our members for helping to shape us into who we are today. Because of you, our co-op truly embodies what it means to work together to rebuild – and we promise you that this will never change.

Here’s to another 68 years (and then some!) working as a unified team to help Alaska continue to evolve.
